What to Look for in a Bodysuit: Fit, Fabric, Comfort & Style Tips Every Woman Should Know

If you’ve ever struggled in what to look for in a bodysuit that fits just right—you’re not alone. Whether you’re wearing it under a blazer for work, pairing it with jeans for brunch, or styling it up for a night out, a great bodysuit can totally elevate your wardrobe. But not all bodysuits are alike in fit, fabric, comfort, and style. And the wrong one? Uncomfortable, unflattering, and usually a waste of money. Trust me on this, if you watch my YouTube video below, you will know exactly what I am talking about. 🙄 🤣

As someone who’s tried bodysuits from Skims, Amazon, Abercrombie, Quince, and more, I’ve learned exactly what to look for. Here’s your ultimate guide to buying the best bodysuit—with all the must-know tips before you add to cart!

1. Always Choose a Snap Closure

Let’s start with one of the most underrated features: the snap closure.
If a bodysuit doesn’t have a snap closure at the bottom, it’s a pass. Period.

If it has hooks like a bra, WALK AWAY. Trust me. They are inconvenient and hard to attach (down there!).

Why?

  • Snap closures make bathroom trips so much easier.

  • Metal snaps last longer than plastic ones.

  • Look for 2 snaps for security and comfort.

A bodysuit without snaps is just not practical—especially for long wear.

2. Pay Attention to Fit & Coverage

The best bodysuits hug your body without digging in or riding up. They should feel secure and somewhat tight, not suffocating.

Here’s what to check:

  • Shoulder seams should sit flat without pulling.

  • Thong-style bodysuits are perfect for seamless looks under jeans or skirts.

  • Full-coverage styles are more comfy for lounging or relaxed fits.

💡 Pro tip: Always read reviews about fit!

3. Look for Stretch and Comfortable Fabric

Comfort is everything—especially with bodysuits you wear all day.
The best fabrics for stretch and comfort include:

  • Cotton Blends (I recommend with stretch!)

  • Modal

  • Spandex blends

  • Nylon blends

  • Elastane

Stay away from stiff, cheap polyester that doesn’t stretch well—it’ll feel itchy and restrictive.

Test the fabric if you can: if you pull and it snaps back, that’s a great sign of lasting stretch and shape retention.

4. Double-Layer Bodysuits = Total Game Changer

Double-layered bodysuits offer:

  • More structure

  • Better coverage (especially in lighter colors)

  • A smoother look under clothes

They’re especially important for white or nude bodysuits, which can be see-through if they’re only single-layer.

5. Support Features Matter (Especially If You Go Braless)

If you love wearing bodysuits without a bra, look for options with:

  • Built-in shelf bras

  • Underwire support

  • Adjustable straps

This will give you shape and lift without having to add another layer underneath.

6. Styling Tips: How to Wear a Bodysuit

Bodysuits are one of the most versatile wardrobe pieces, especially for women in their 30s and 40s who want polished yet effortless looks. Here’s how I love to wear mine:

  • Casual: Pair a bodysuit with mom jeans and sneakers. Add a baseball cap for a cool weekend vibe.

  • Dressy: Style a satin or square-neck bodysuit with a midi skirt or linen pants, and strappy heels.

  • Workwear: Layer a neutral bodysuit under a blazer with high-waisted trousers or a pencil skirt.

👉 Pro tip: Stick with neutral colors like black, white, beige, or taupe for maximum versatility. Then add in fun colors or prints once you’ve got the basics down.
